As part of the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Interfaces (Division Data Science, Statistics, and Stochastics – DSSS) within the Faculty of Digital and Analytical Sciences, the University of Salzburg is seeking to appoint a
Pre-doctoral researcher (f/m/d; 30 hours/week),
initially with a 1-year contract, which will be turned into a full 3-year contract upon a positive evaluation (based on criteria that are defined together with the candidate). The successful candidate will do biostatistical research within the team of Dr. Georg Zimmermann, Postdoctoral Researcher in the ‘Excellence in Digital Sciences and Interdisciplinary Technologies’ (EXDIGIT) initiative, funded by the Province of Salzburg. At the same time, the research will be conducted in close collaboration with statisticians at two top-level universities in Belgium, as well as with other experts from Dr Zimmermann’s international network (within the framework of a WEAVE project).
The research focus will be on evaluating existing and developing novel semi- and nonparametric statistical methods for small samples, with a particular emphasis on applications in rare diseases, as well as in applied research in the Life Sciences in general. Accordingly, the expectations are to
- present research results at scientific (biostatistical) conferences
- publish in peer-reviewed journals in (bio-)statistics
- implement the proposed statistical methods in software (preferably R), and to develop corresponding educational materials (e.g., tutorials)
- enrol in a doctoral programme at University of Salzburg, and in particular to write a (cumulative) doctoral thesis
- participate in meetings with clinicians and applied researchers, and more generally contribute to projects related to rare diseases at the (inter-)national level.
The successful candidate will work in a flexible, open-minded, stimulating environment, which offers options for individual career development, joint doctoral thesis supervision arrangements, as well as opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation, in particular due to the close connections of Dr Zimmermann’s group with the Research Programme Biomedical Data Science at Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg, the IDA Lab Salzburg, and several EU-level networks, projects, and initiatives.
In turn, the candidate is expected to have
- a solid background in mathematics or (bio-)statistics
- a strong intrinsic motivation to do research at the interface between mathematics, statistics, and real-life challenges in the Life Sciences
- basic programming skills in R or Python
- a positive attitude towards working together with applied researchers
According to the Collective Agreement for University Employees, the successful candidate will be allocated to Employment Group B1 (EUR 2786.10 gross for 30 hours/week; monthly salary, paid 14 times a year).
Applications should be written in English and include the following documents:
- cover letter describing your motivation (max. 1 page)
- a CV
- the MSc thesis or equivalent, and the certificates of all (major) courses of the curriculum
- if the candidate has not yet completed the MSc (or equivalent), a brief letter containing the timeline for completion as well as a seminar work / the BSc thesis should be submitted
- a list of publications (if existent)
Please submit all documents as PDF files to (subject: ‘Application predoc position Zimmermann’). Review of applications will start on Aug 7 2025 and will continue until the position is filled.
